Design and additive manufacturing of modular multistable mechanical metamaterials with tunable properties
The project centers on the design and fabrication of a multistable mechanical metamaterial using multimaterial fused filament fabrication. This versatile metamaterial combines three key properties: stiffness tunability, shape morphing, and modularity. By harnessing the geometrical frustration of coupled von Mises trusses, the metamaterial’s properties can be effectively altered. The project involves theoretical, numerical, and experimental validation, and investigates various applications, including sandwich panels with tunable stiffness and morphing surfaces.
