3DREAM: Rapid additive manufacturing of large sandwich composite structures for aerospace applications
The 3DREAM project brings together thirteen (13) industrial partners (including Quebec companies specialized in 3D printing) under the scientific direction of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) at Boucherville (QC). A smaller part of the project (2020-2024) is between NRC-Boucherville and the LM2 team at Polytechnique Montréal and 2 industrial partners, Safran Tech and Solaxis, and is financially supported by the industrial partners and NSERC (Alliance Program).
The main objective of this project is to develop new composite materials while improving open-source printing processes aimed at manufacturing industry-approved composite parts with significantly reduced manufacturing and materials costs. So far, the team formulated and characterized high-performance composite materials (PEI and PPS reinforced with carbon fibers and thermal black) with high mechanical and thermomechanical performances compared to injection molded (IM) matrices and implemented these composites for FFF printing of sandwich panel structures.
